NEW YORK STATE FINALLY STATES IN WRITING THAT THE NEW YORK OATH KEEPERS ARE NOT RIGHT-WING EXTREMISTS AND/OR A THREAT TO LAW ENFORCEMENT
09-07-2017 10:48 am - John Wallace - New York Oath Keepers
Back on June 12, 2014, the New York State Intelligence Center issued NYSIC Bulletin New York State Counter Terrorism Bulletin: CTM 14-07: Recent Spike in Violence Targeting Law Enforcement that mistakenly identified the New York Oath Keepers as a far-right extremist group and/or a threat to law enforcement.

Over the next three years, we clearly pointed out the unreasonable logic and misstatements of fact that were used by the New York State Intelligence Center (NYSIC) to politically demonize the New York Oath Keeper organization whose clearly stated nonpartisan mission is to simply encourage our Military and Law Enforcement Officers, public office holders and others, to honor their oaths to the United States and New York State Constitutions.

Both the United States Constitution and the New York State Constitution clearly enumerate that ‘We the People’ have a right to petition the government or any department thereof, and we honorably do so for this redress of our grievances.

In our pursuit of truth and fairness, we formally requested that the officials at the NYSIC issue a public correction, indicating their error in classifying New York Oath Keepers as a far-right extremist group and/or a threat to law enforcement. On October 24, 2014, several executive staff members of the New York Oath Keepers, including myself, met with representatives of the New York State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (as members of the New York State Intelligence Center) at Troop "G" headquarters of the New York State Police, located at 760 Troy Schenectady Road, Latham, NY 12110. We specifically addressed all the relevant issues and answered all the questions asked of us in an honest and forthright manner. After the conclusion of the meeting, which lasted about two hours, we left reassured that neither representatives of the New York State Police nor the Federal Bureau of Investigation considered the New York Oath Keepers to be a ‘far-right extremist group and/or a threat to law enforcement.’ We asked that the bulletin in question be withdrawn, or amended and that correspondence be prepared and sent to us acknowledging that an error was made by the NYSIC when they publicly identified the New York Oath Keepers to be a ‘far-right extremist group and/or a threat to law enforcement.’

On May 19, 2017, the New York Oath Keepers sent our final request to the Governor and the Superintendent of the New York State Police clearly pointing out that we are an organization consisting of thousands of active duty and retired military, police and fire personnel, who have at one or more times in our lives taken an Oath to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America. These Oaths do not expire and we take them with the utmost seriousness.

The Oath Keepers have several programs currently in place designed to support the police officers and other first responders. Some of them are:

SUPPORT THE POLICE PROGRAM
Within the past year, Oath Keeper Chapters throughout New York State in Fulton have sent 50 to 100 NY Oath Keeper members to stand in front of sheriff's and local police stations with signs that read "Police Lives Matter' and 'We support the police' after anti-police demonstrations were held at these locations. The response from both the public and from the police themselves were very positive.

OPERATION FAMILY SAFE AND OPERATON BACK OUR POLICE

This program is designed to help protect the families of law enforcement officers and other first responders when they and/or their families are threatened with violence for doing their jobs.

These are not programs that would indicate that we are a ‘right-wing extremist organization and a threat to law enforcement.’

We asked the Governor and the Superintendent, that at the very least, we deserved the decency of a reply from the NYSIC, either concurring with our position or detailing evidence that justifies the initial action of NYSIC applying the derogatory label to New York Oath Keepers. We were confident that state officials would see that we receive the opportunity to restore the New York Oath Keepers' good name, which has been wrongly defamed by this seemingly capricious and arbitrary NYSIC conclusion, being the result of false information and unreasonable logic supplied mainly by the politically biased Southern Poverty Law Center, which in 2014 was fired and discredited by the FBI as a legitimate and accurate intelligence source. We asked for a timely and favorable response, without the need for us to seek a solution from the NY state legislature or in the federal courts.

On June 27, 2017, we received correspondence from Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Cooney, New York State Police, Office of Counter Terrorism, which stated in part that the New York State Intelligence Center recognizes “….that as an organization, the New York Oath Keepers does not support or condone unlawful, violent acts” and that the New York State Police does not consider the New York Oath Keepers “as a right extremist group and/or a threat to law enforcement.”

Although it took three years to finally get this official decision in writing from the State of New York, it finally opens the door to active duty and retired police officers in the state of New York to join our organization without fear of being connected to a right-wing extremist organization.
