YES! AUSTRALIA CAN CONTROL ITS POPULATION TO REMAIN WITHIN ITS CARRYING CAPACITY
08-06-2010 2:38 am - Frosty Wooldridge
Jessica Brown, policy analyst at the Centre for Independent Studies, needs to bring her mind to the table rather than her emotions when it comes to overpopulation in Australia. Citizens of Australia need not be lemmings jumping over a cliff in a mindless ritual of national suicide. From reading her diatribe, “The debate should not be about whether we should have a Big Australia or a Small Australia, but about how we can make a growing Australia work, and how we can make it a prosperous and livable place for us all.”

That’s like telling readers to paint the deck chairs on the Titanic to make them look pretty. That’s like swimming with Great White sharks praying they suddenly turned into vegetarians. That’s like walking across the Nullabor Plains with a thimble full of water and expect to make it from Ceduna to Perth. That’s like jumping off a cliff and hoping she grows wings on her way down. “It’s time again, to correct the educationally credentialed but innumerate experts who say that growth is inevitable,” said U.S. demographic expert Dr. Albert Bartlett (www.albartlett.com ) “Innumeracy is the mathematical equivalent of illiteracy.”

Bartlett spells it out for Jessica Brown. She fails to comprehend limited carrying capacity. She fails to understand Peak Oil. She does not understand loss of quality of life. She disregards animal extinction rates caused by human overpopulation. She negates acidified oceans, ecological footprint, carbon footprint, crowding, climate destabilization and a dozen more consequences. Fellow earthly citizens: we cannot continue growing human population without severe and ugly consequences. Either we come to terms with graceful population stability, or Mother Nature will do it for us. She already does!
Instead of reading ‘innumerates’ like Jessica Brown, read reality with Australian writers Mark O’Connor and William Lines’ book Overloading Australia. Better to deal with reality rather than avoid it until it deals with you rather harshly as already illustrated in places like Bangladesh, India or China. As a world traveler, I am amazed at how the Jessica Brown’s of the world won their argument in places like Bangladesh, but think that country’s daily nightmare won’t happen to her or Australia. You can take this to the bank: if Australia continues on its immigration-driven growth path, it will collapse from lack of water, energy and resources to serve the citizens of Australia.

If Brown could look past her nose, she will see the fruition of her apathy in China, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and Mexico. See it in the 18 million people that starve to death annually around the world in countries that overran their ability to feed and water themselves. If she could see it in the 10 million children that starve to death annually, she might change her emotions to rational thinking and actions to promote a stable and sustainable population in Australia. (Source: World Health Organization) Brown doesn’t understand that ‘exponential growth’ cannot be sustained. It ultimately collapses.

Brown wrote, “An honest politician would say: "Population growth and population ageing are happening whether we like it or not. So, we'd better get ready."”

Reality check: you cannot get ready for 1. Not enough water. 2. No more oil.
3. No more resources. 4. No more planet with stable environment.

We planetary citizens must come to terms with limits. We must change 20th century unlimited growth paradigms to 21st realities. Australia possesses enough integrity, personal responsibility and intelligence to lead the world toward a livable country and planet for all living creatures on Earth.
