| Iraq :: New World Order - UN :: Print this Article THE LATEST GOVERNMENT LIE 08-24-2010 6:11 pm - Kevin McCashion Here’s a brief example of how our government “of the people, for the people, and by the people” - in the words of a famous subject of American mythology – lies to the people. The President makes a promise, in this case, that combat operations will end in Iraq by August 31st. Why did he make that promise? It’s good to have a goal? American war-weariness? Insider insight? Mid-term elections? For our purposes, it doesn’t really matter. August 31st approaches, the announcement is made, a ceremony or two is held in Iraq, some photos are taken, and the Associated Press reports. Our local overworked, understaffed paper, the Times Union, picks up the Associated Press story, the nice pictures, and runs with it here. The story title nicely hedges – “US troops unlikely to resume combat duties in Iraq” – and fairly mentions that 50,000 US troops will remain in Iraq – and - On Thursday, the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division began crossing the border from Iraq into Kuwait, becoming the last combat brigade to leave Iraq. Its exodus, along with that of the approximately 2,000 remaining U.S. combat forces destined to leave in the coming days, fulfills Obama’s pledge to end combat operations in Iraq by Aug. 31. Mission accomplished! Finish your coffee! Off to work! Life goes on in the “Homeland” of the American Empire. Of course, since Vietnam, Watergate, the outing of Santa Claus, or for whatever reason – some – but all too few of us – have a healthy skepticism of anything and everything our elected officials tell us, and this case is no different. The Army Times itself reports that “Combat brigades in Iraq under different name” – huh? what? That’s right, the last Stryker Brigade – is gone – but there are still Stryker Brigades there, you see, “so while the “last full U.S. combat brigade” have left Iraq, just under 50,000 soldiers from specially trained heavy, infantry and Stryker brigades will stay, as well as two combat aviation brigades.” Whither Orwell? Moreover, as we are all prone to outsourcing services these days, and since the combat brigades are gone, the Stars and Stripes is reporting that the State Department is fielding it’s own army of 7,000 contractors and they also “have requests to the Pentagon for Black Hawk helicopters; 50 mine-resistant ambush-protected vehicles; fuel trucks; high-tech surveillance systems; and other military gear.” Ah, a private army for Hillary Clinton? What a wonderful precedent. Of course, the massive use of private contractors in Iraq has been well documented. The question remains the same question I asked a crowd of cowed leftists at the wonderful Sanctuary for Independent Media in June of 2009 – “When are you going to wake up?” When is the “professional left” going to snap out of their trance and look at a politicians actions rather than their words? The anti-war elements of the “right” or “conservative” movement – the Birchers and the Libertarians – were effectively silenced and marginalized from the 1950s and 1960s on by the big government totalitarians like William F. Buckley and his National Review crowd and the nascent neoconservatives. Just one result is our mess in Iraq. Now, given the content and complexion of our current administration, as the drumbeat for a suicidal war with Iran grows louder, there is no chance for a meaningful opposition to ever expanding war and empire to come effectively from the right. Any opposition is quickly dismissed as racism or hypocrisy from the “where were you when Bush was…” crowd. It is up to the professional left to oppose the continued destructive policies of the Obama Administration. Will they stand up? Or will they remain – as the anti-war left is often wrongfully derided as – cowards? -------------------------- From Times Union Blog: http://blog.timesunion.com/teaparty/the-latest-government-lie/1167/ |
